If you’re new to trucking and you’re just getting started out on the road, there are a couple things you need to be aware of to stay safe. Like most jobs, there are some security concerns that go along with truck driving. However, if you prepare yourself and stay alert, you are much more likely to be secure out on the road. Be Alert
First and foremost, it’s extremely important to be alert. You’ll most likely be driving by yourself, so it is up to you to keep yourself, your cargo, and those around you safe. You’re probably aware of the importance of checking your surroundings while on the road, but don’t forget that you also need to be aware of what is going on around your truck when you’re stopped as well.
Before you stop, survey the area. Keep an eye out for anything that might be suspicious. This will help you determine where to park or if it’s even safe to park. Then, once you are parked, you’ll want to make sure you keep an eye on your rig as much as possible.
Lock Up and Double Check
Another important but often overlooked truck driver safety tip is to always lock up when you’re stepping away from your truck. This includes when refueling or going inside a rest stop. Double check that everything is locked up properly before you leave to prevent being an easy target for thieves.
Be Strategic
One of the most important things you’ll learn in a commercial truck driver safety training course is how to be strategic with where you park (whether that’s overnight, for a quick stop, or to unload your cargo). This is one of the biggest security basics – be strategic about where you park. Are there other trucks around you? Is the area well-lit? Can you back up your rig to another truck to make it harder for the doors to be opened? How can you best protect your cargo and yourself while stopped?
Utilize Other Safety Tools
There’s only so much you can do on your own to keep yourself safe, and then beyond that it’s really helpful to supplement with some additional security tools. There are a handful of apps available having to do with trucking safety that allow drivers to communicate with each other. These apps can help you determine if a stop is safe based on other driver’s feedback.
Alarm systems and camera systems can also help to keep you secure while on the road. If you want to take extra precautions, then installing one of these systems may be the way to go.
How To React After a Theft
While unlikely, it is still possible to follow all of these truck safety tips and still fall victim to theft. There’s only so much you can do to stay alert and keep yourself and your cargo safe. If you do experience theft while on the road, there are a couple things to keep in mind:
- Call 911.
- Remember as much as you can about the theft so that you can provide as many details as possible to the police when giving your report.
- Stay in a safe area with other people (if possible) until the authorities arrive. Your personal safety is extremely important.
