Sleep Cycle Tips for Truck Drivers
Truck drivers can sometimes lead a stressful life. The hours are long, but if you’ve got a good podcast or radio station to listen to, time will fly by. It can sometimes be lonely too, but many trucking companies allow you to bring a family member or a pet along for the ride.
Probably one of the biggest aspects of the job the truckers struggle with is sleeping in trucks. Getting enough sleep is vital to good mental health, but it is also important to remain alert while driving such a large vehicle. Tip #1: A Good Mattress
Many drivers end up sleeping at truck stops. Although that might not sound like the most comfortable arrangement, you’d be surprised. A comfortable mattress and set of fluffy pillows can make you forget that you’re sleeping in trucks at all. Tip #2: Pay Attention To Where You Park
Your big rig sleep quarters has to meet certain requirements if you’re going to get the restorative rest that you need to get back on the road. Try to find a location that is on even ground, has very little lit, at a cozy temperature, and away from busy areas. Unless you’re able to enter REM sleep for at least a few hours, you won’t feel truly rested. By finding a good location to park, you can make it easier for you to fall asleep faster.
Tip #3: Create A Plan With Your Partner
Truckers driving in groups of two will be able to take turns sleeping in trucks. Discuss with your partner at what times you’ll both be taking your break and do everything you can to respect their time asleep. While your partner is resting, try to avoid any bumpy areas of the road or loud noises so that they can get the healthy sleep they need to do their best and feel their best. In return, they will do the same for you.
Tip #4: Stick To A Schedule
If you can set aside a specific time for sleeping in trucks, your body will naturally be able to fall into sleep quicker as it gets into a rhythm. Obviously, the sooner you fall asleep, the better. Depending on your driving schedule, you can set aside a six to eight-hour block in the morning or at night for when you will get your sleep.
